Weekly Wrap Up (6/3/19-6/7/19)

With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.

Google Stadia and Cloud Gaming

Google has reviled more details about its upcoming video game streaming service Google Stadia. From their press release “Stadia Founder’s Edition lets you instantly enjoy games in up to 4K on your TV1 without a console. You can also play across laptops, desktops, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3a2 with cross-screen early access starting from day one.”  You can currently pre-order the Stadia Founder’s Edition for $129 and that comes with Blue Stadia Controller, three months of Stadia Pro for yourself and a friend and a Google Chromecast Ultra.

Wiggin’s thoughts on the subject:  I’m sitting here yet again as this technology comes back for round two. We had a couple of these cloud based gaming and one I recall the most vividly is OnLive. OnLive launched in 2010 as a way to play games on your computer without needing a high end machine to provide gamers an experience without the overhead of owning a powerful computer. This is pretty much what Google Stadia and Cloud gaming is trying to accomplish but this time with big names in the industry providing the infrastructure to support the streaming of the games. I’m not entirely sure who this service is directed at though. The bandwidth requirements to play something (10 Mbps is recommended as a minimum) isn’t cheap and those that have quick internet I feel like would also have some type of console or PC to play games on. If you were to take it on the road it would be hard to guarantee that bandwidth wherever you end up or go. Let’s be real, getting 10 Mbps in a hotel or plane isn’t going to happen and that is where I could see this service being most beneficial. I hope that this service can be useful to consumers and also expanding the gaming audience but I don’t think it is for me.

Destroy All Humans Remake

Add another remake to the “FINALLY!” bin. Destroy All Humans remake has been announced by THQ Nordic coming in 2020 not only to consoles but PC as well along with cut content from the original game.

Ozzy’s Thoughts: Long ago, I had an Xbox. The reason I had it? This. Destroy All Humans and Destroy All Humans 2 were such great fun I couldn’t stop playing it. The comedy was great, the voice actors and silly story kept me going, I truly wanted to destroy all humans just for the laughs. (My inner Bender is showing, sorry.) For those who never played it, think Saints Row 4 but you’re the alien. Anal probes, tractor beams, plasma weapons, mind control, all the stereotypical sci-fi jokes and things you can think of from long ago. It’s truly a cult classic game and I am so happy to go back to it. I hope it does well enough to see the sequel and maybe a better third one (ignoring the Wii exclusive one of course) get released as well.
