Elite Dangerous: Horizons – Multi-Crew Dev Update (My Personal Thoughts)

Today we woke up to some news about the next update to the ED: Horizons season with Multi-Crew information.

We all knew it was coming but no specifics have been given until now. A few days ago (1/27/17) we were given the time of which the beta would be launched (Week ending in Feburary 26) (Link) and more than likely it’ll will run about more or less a month which helps with the bug squishing.

But today we woke up to some more juicy details about how some of the mechanics will work. Of course the line that people will ignore that should’ve been in 24 font, bold, italic, and underlined in red color is that “some details may still change” before finally being put into the game. So if theirs anything you or anyone else doesn’t like about the beta there is still time to fix it. And as we’ve seen in the past with FDev, they always go back to something and tweak it or outright change it.

I read the post (link at the bottom of this page) and of course I’m excited about what’s to come. Who doesn’t want multiple people on your ship? Ruining your paint job, spilling there drinks on your chairs because they never put it in that space cup holder that’s right next to them and leaving salt and fries all over the deck because we bumped into the wall as we were leaving Space In ‘N Out Burger?

But back to being serious, yes I am excited, really excited for this update simply because it’s been a long time coming. Being able to have a players “close by” to help you fight, and of course set up your character to look like what you want instead of generic Daft Punk extra number 45.
But as we’ve learned from the post, there are going to be people not happy with at least two of the things the Dev blog said.

1. Being able to join a crew from anywhere “regardless of distance” and leave at any time “making the whole affair a very friendly, drop in – drop out procedure.” Which I understand why you’d want that. Who wants to run all the way across the galaxy to join up with a friend, who say is always playing the game and you are just a casual player…filthy animal…who just wants to hang out with his bud in space. This setup really helps with just being able to get in and go without a lot of work.

I personally wouldn’t like to do that. I’d rather go find my friend(s) who want to join and meet up with them instead of just “magically teleporting”…it doesn’t say teleporting, just what I’m calling it…to my command deck.

2. The next one I see as the ultimate “baddies dream” is where you do something illegal, get a fine/bounty as a crew…killing a random player for no reason…everyone gets fined for it, but can leave without having that crime on your head but all credits earned will be lost because of it if you wish.
What money you earn as a crew everyone gets it equally…ex: kill a baddie and get 100K credits, everyone on the crew gets 100K while currently if you’re in a wing: kill a baddie for 100K, each wing member gets 50K…but also any fines/bounties are shared as well. You can leave and keep your money and fines but if you don’t want the fine, you have to give up all that you earned.

I see this as another way for Trollers to give people are hard time. If you’re in a Private Group that doesn’t have to deal with them then this doesn’t apply but for Open Play, people will have a hard time copping with this simply because they can show up, kill you, and since the games current punishment system isn’t that much of a punishment in game, even if that Troller was not to give up there fine, he/she could continue on there merry way with little to no resistance. I feel it should be just like the current punishment system, you do something bad, get fined, no exception. Yes it’s not that big of a problem and not that much of a deterrent and hopefully in time they’ll figure out a way of a proper punishment for doing this but as of right now it’s better than nothing.

But again, the words that should’ve been underlined, bold faced and italicized that most people will ignore is the fact that this can all change. Just like the original ship transfer system of the last update which was originally instantaneous was voted on by the community and changed to what we all wanted, a timed transfer system which was also much cheaper by comparison.

But moving on from the bad, the very big plus from all this now is with Multi-Crew and Carriers (ships with fighter bays)…like I figured they would when fighters were added…is that now you can finally launch both your fighters, not just one. But that’s just me and my three ships that can launch fighters being really happy I can finally use both. And the addition of a proper camera system for turreted weapons so you can have crew on the guns is also a very welcome addition.

I only scratched the surface here. Read more at the Dev-Blog below…my personal motto is to avoid reading the comments on that or any forums because it becomes the classic internet problem of kids yelling about how they didn’t get candy and how they can make a better candy than you…and we’ll have more about upcoming information about the Multi-Crew Update when they arrive.

Until then, fly safe and be nice to each other.
