Weekly Wrap Up (9/17/18 – 9/21/18)

With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.

More character re-works coming to Overwatch

Overwatch is continuing to rework and change its roster of heroes. There most recent hero rework is coming to Torbjorn.  They are completely changing how he plays and all of his abilities functions and reworked his weapon as well.  You can read all about the changes here because that’s not what I want to talk about here.

Ultimate: Molten Core (New)

Wiggin’s thoughts on the subject:  So you may be curious if I’m not here to talk about the specific changes what do I want to talk about? The fact that these changes keep happening to the degree that they do.  One of the reasons I stopped playing Overwatch as much as I once was, was because of the ever changing landscape of the heroes. As a casual player having to relearn heroes every other month or so was just not worth the effort in terms of gameplay and enjoyment. Not to mention one of the big changes to Mercy and Ozzy was pretty much a Mercy main at the type was not a fan the changes and he lost a lot of interest in the game. This experience will eventually happen to all players who like or have enjoyed specific heroes and their abilities. As a player I don’t want to keep relearning all the characters whenever one gets changed. I’m okay with balance changes or fixes to exploits but entire character reworks is frustrating. They could of done with Team Fortress 2 and give items to characters to allow them to create different play styles and abilities without it being something players can’t change. It seems quite short sighted on Blizzards end or they are doing this just to “keep it fresh” to keep players coming back.  The PC Gamer article says the Kaplan said that minor changes are coming to Orisa, Solider: 76, Pharaha, and McCree without giving any details. I would like to think these changes are tweaks to create a more fun and enjoyable experience for all but at the end of the day we don’t know how these changes will affect the game.  Team Fortress 2 was a perfect place to look for how to do updates correctly (after they learned not to do one character at a time) and here we are with Blizzard repeating Valves mistakes in this department. Perhaps once the majority of these changes are done I’ll take another look at it but in the mean time I’ll shelve the game, not to mention the grind for lootboxes.

Telltale Games layoff all but 25 of there employees

PCGamer has confirmed with Telltale that they have laid off the majority of the employees, keeping only 25 on “to fulfill the company’s obligations to its board and partners.”  CEO Pete Hawley said they’ve spent the last year trying to “set the company on a new course, unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there.” Last year, the number of people on staff peaked at 400 people before the first round of layoffs. It is unknown what will happen to the current ongoing series “The Walking Dead: The Final Season” or what will happen to the other game series Telltale has.

Ozzy’s Thoughts: My first Telltale game was “Tales of the Borderlands” and it was, and still is, a personal favorite of mine to this day, Top 5.  The only other I’ve played was the first season of “The Walking Dead” and that tore my heart out but it was so good overall with only a rocky start.  As a consumer, I’ve wanted another season of “Tales of” since the first episode and am now sadden that looks even more unlikely than it was before and trying to get the strength to play the next Walking Dead seasons. As a person learning about all the people that just got laid off, my heart goes out to all of you and wish the best for you.  All of you brought these wonderful stories to countless people, drama and laughter.  Right now I know it’s hard and everything looks grim and it’s of little compensation right now, but I, on behalf of all the others saying the same thing, thank you for your stories, thank you for putting all the effort into the games you’ve made and we hope you get back to it as soon as possible.
