With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.
Square Enix CEO comments on loot boxes
In an interview with Metro Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda talks about quite a few different topics. One topic that caught my attention and others was the comments in regards to loot boxes and the implantation in single player games. Matsuda responds to a question about loot box implication by saying “I think what’s really important about loot boxes is whether they match the original game design or not.” This is the type of thing you would like everyone to say when they are CEO of a games company as you want games the loot box scheme actually work with to have them and not have them throw into everything.
Wiggin’s thoughts on the subject : With Square Enix being so known for some wonderful single players including a franchise I’ve enjoyed in the past, the Deus Ex: franchise, it would be nice to know that single player games are safe from microtransactions and loot boxes. We saw how they have already made their way into other single player games last year so it’s not a new idea. I hope we can continue to keep the single player games free from mobile game schemes and gameplay loops. I feel though that is coming to an end shortly. This is an ever changing industry and landscape and I can’t say that within the next two years we won’t see more single player games with even more loot boxes and microtransactions. There is nothing stopping the industry from going in that direction and with the prevalence of the type of mechanics that make mobile games so divisive moving their way into our home video games. I only hope that it takes longer then that but realistically it’s only a matter of time I think.
