The team at Eugen Systems has brought us yet another reason to head back to the beaches of Normandy in their 2017 RTS Steel Division: Normandy 44. It is always a good thing when we get the opportunity to go back and enjoy a game we previously played and this DLC is a one of those opportunities. With that being said is this trip Back To Hell worth the cost of the ticket ? Let’s find out.
So let us begin with what is included with what is potentially the final piece of DLC for Steel Division. This DLC adds fifty-eight new units, the most added in any update. Some to note are the Wasp MKIIC and SAS but realistically there are too many to list here but you can read through them in the newspaper release bellow. However while there are a large number of individual units added there are also four more divisions added to the game. These four new divisions are split between axis and allies adding two to each side.
For the allies you access to the 7th Armored Division (UK) and the Demi- Brigade SAS (FR). For the Axis you gain access to the 2. Panzerdivision (DE) and Festungs Gross-Paris (DE). These both add unique units and gameplay strategies to a game that already has quite a varied degree of strategy. It’s always nice to see my divisions added to the game. Some might say that these new units are perhaps overpowered in the multiplayer arena and hopefully if this is true that balance patches tweak any potential issues.
However while these additions are always a nice reason for some new DLC the main experience of this DLC is the historical co-op missions you can take part in with or against your friends or the AI. This is the real meat of the DLC and it adds seven historical missions that are based on real options. These missions include eleven never before seen division that are interesting because they are pre-made for you and you don’t to do any customizing of them. I enjoy the level of detail that went into each of these seven historical missions as they add to the overall historical detail this game does such a good job of accomplishing. While I understand the reason for them not being changeable I miss the ability to create a custom deck based around my play style.
So what do this all mean for the DLC and if it’s worth the $15 price tag ? That is quite an interesting question to answer because it’s a much more subjective proposition then the less expensive and previous DLC. The Back To Hell DLC has a lot to offer for those interested in the single player portion of the game and that is something that I can appreciate. As far as those people interested in the multiplayer aspect of the game it is only adding two factions to each side but is a bit more expensive than the previous DLC that also added four factions to the game. I definitely am enjoying the additional factions due to the new units that were added and I think that the co-op missions are a well thought out expansion of the base game. However if you’re not one hundred percent sold on the co-op potion of the DLC then I’d suggest waiting for a sale.
