With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.
Dealing with Discord Nitro
Ozzy: Not news per se, but just wanting to vent my annoyance at discords Nitro.
My friend and closest thing to a “boss” I have here was always wanting see just how good the nitro upgrade was. I figured out of the niceness of my heart I would gift him Nitro which of course not only gives the server a ‘boost’ but also give free things such as games and free in game items which at the time I wanted him to gift me items in Paladins. I gifted him Nitro, he was happy, only to find out the only way to get the BEST boost, would be to have 50 people with nitro boosting our server. At the time I thought having two people would be enough so I bought myself nitro as well as the free item in Paladins were at a minimum nicety I would like but such a minor audio quality increase (non-audiophiles will NOT notice a difference, I am one and I don’t notice a difference) for $20 boosts on top of paying the actual fee to keep the server going is completely unacceptable. Minuscule audio quality increase, bigger upload sizes, ‘better’ emoticons? I know this company is suppose to make money but this is nickel and dimming me for nothing of worth. It’s like charging me more money for a bottle that’s just a brighter color but exactly the same thing.
90% of the games they have in there library (Metro, Paladins, and one other game I forget off the top of my head are the only ones I know) I’ve never heard of nor do I want them. Even if I totally in love with a certain discord channel for whatever reasons…why would I give them my boost? I need those people at the meme discord to scream memes at me at 384kbps quality? No, no I don’t. Having different levels to make “your discord even better” is just despicable. If it were one time paying for max level or monthly for everything maxed out then I could see it as worth it.
What it is now? I lost $20 that I wish I could have back because I just paid for air in my tires and I live in California.
Wiggin’s Thoughts: So Ozzy bought me Nitro a few weeks ago at this point as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about after another friend had mentioned he had noticed an improvement in another server he was in regards to the audio quality. So when I returned from vacation I was gifted Nitro for a month. Right away I went and boosted the server only to find out you needed at least two people to get the server to level one.
As you can see from this lovely image it increases the total emoji’s to 100 and 128kb audio quality. The default highest audio level is 96kb. From 96 to 128kb you’re not really going to notice a difference. I sure have not noticed a difference. I have to point out though that even if you get your server boosted you have to go in and manually change each channel to 128kb quality, creating a ton of extra work instead of them automatically updating to the highest setting you can use. I’m not really interested in the emjoi’s and to be honest feels to cater to a younger age group.
Ozzy had asked me to send him gifts that were given for having Nitro for Paladins and I had the game installed via steam. However due to some sort of bug I had reinstall the game via Discord even though I had linked my account to discord and via the Paladins website. I was finally able to receive the loot I was supposed to get but the hassle was not worth it. I just can’t figure out the purpose of this Nitro, if I’m going to spend money for a VOIP service I’m going to rent a Teamspeak server or some other server where the cost of the server actually goes to good use.
