Weekly Wrap Up (2/5/18) – (2/9/18)

With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.

Big Boat Interactive releases trailer for Battlezone 2 remake:
Battlezone: Combat Commander

(PCGamer)
Big Boat Interactive released a trailer showing off a side-by-side comparison of the original Battlezone 2: Combat commander (1999) and the upcoming remake Battlezone: Combat Commander (Releasing March 1.) While the remake of the original Battlezone (1998) was very well done and made to easily run on modern systems, it was not entirely “upgraded” with any modern tech, such as better textures and such. This remake is going across the spectrum of upgrades including 4k, new shaders, new effects, new sounds, cloud saving, cross platform play (Steam/GoG) and 14 player multiplayer.

Ozzy’s thoughts: Being a fan of the classic Battlezones and with it being kept alive by modders, I’ve been looking forward to this remake ever since they remade the first one. While this isn’t exactly serious news or anything, remaking this series of all games to remake, shows that more and more people want to go back to the “classic” type games. While Battlezone and Battlezone 2 never would’ve swept all the awards if they launched in this day and age (especially BZ2’s rushed to release and full of bugs) but they were one of those games that people just enjoy to play. No “git gud” and horrendous fan baseor disgusting loot boxes, just a good story, semi-good mechanics of a FPS/RTS hybrid, and enjoyable experience. I wish more modern companies would attempt that nowadays instead of just yearly releases of the same crap, loot boxes, etc. etc.

Eco released in Early Access

Source: Steam

(Steam)
Eco is a unique sounding game with the premise that you have to build up a town and build up to a high enough technology level in order to stop an incoming asteroid that will destroy the planet. But in doing so you have to start at simply living in the woods, evolving towards a type of “industrial revolution” and onward. But the catch is where you get these resources the local ecosystem is dependent on living there too. So if you chop down all the trees, tree living animals die out which in turn kills the predators that feed on them and so on and so forth. In other words, can you evolve into making technology to save the planet without yourself kill the planet in your own way.

Ozzy’s thoughts: There are very few Early Access games that I have ever actually been attracted to, Subnautica was one of them, this is another. While I got into Subnautica a year before releases (which was more or less the reason I got it in the first place) I’ll be watching out for Eco simply because the premise is really interesting but since it JUST launched, I don’t plan on trying it out anytime soon. One of the reviews on Steam about it makes it very simple: “Minecraft for Hippies.” Trying to get tech to save the planet, trying to save the planet from yourself, building, multiplayer, politics, leaders and voting. I find that all very interesting and more attractive than a game that says “hey, blow this guys head off with 360noscopewtfbbq” not that those games are a bad thing, I just want something different. While I cannot condone or recommend of buying any Early Access game, I at least will be keeping on eye on it.
