Weekly Warp Up (10/22/18 – 10/28/18)

With the speed at which news comes out in the gaming industry we sometimes miss important or news worthy things. Some of these things we want to talk about in a way that is both easy for you guys and allows us to get all the facts together as some of these stories develop quickly. Sometimes we also just cover topics that we find interesting and want to discuss.

Elite Dangerous Beyond: Chapter 4 update teased

Elite Dangerous is getting its final update of this season and before the open beta is out, Frontier Development has been streaming some of the new content from its Dev builds. October 25 was the most recent stream, two more coming each Thursday until just after the beta starts on October 30.
The first stream was showing off the new graphical changes such as the new lighting system and new graphical changes to planets and the updated ship UI. The second stream showed off the new scenarios and how you can affect the BGS (Background Simulation) in the game with much clearer explanations and feedback.
The next two streams show off the new mining and squadron systems (November 1) and the new ships (November 8.)

Ozzy’s Thoughts: I know this game isn’t everyone cup of tea but I’ve honestly loved this game from the beginning. Take a trip in the Wayback machine and there is one trailer from long ago that showed off a simple scenario that could be possible in the nowhere NEAR (not even alpha) finished Elite Dangerous. This scenario showed off a group of ships answering a distress call to a capital ship under attack. It was a very simple trailer, mostly showing off the (fake) cockpit, the music, and of course the grandeur of battle between two fighting behemoths. When the game finally launched, well…we never had that scenario actually happen. Yes capital ships fought each other but that scenario from the trailer never happened. But now, many years later we finally get the mechanics and missions like that in this upcoming update. Along with a plethora of wanted/need updates to the game.
Some content from Chapter 4 was pushed back until the next season, but the fact that this last major update before the next season comes along and contains so many changes:

-Orrey Map (everyone wanted this from Day 1)
-Massive Exploration changes (No more honking and jumping among other things)
-Lighting system update (personal want of mine)
-Squadrons (in game clan system)
-Mining changes (Blow rocks up to make money? Yes please.)
-“Space weather” (My inner trekkie is very happy about this)
-New ships (PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PANTHER CLIPPER PLEASE!)
-Properly being giving information on how you affect the galaxy (BGS)
-Ship UI changes (some of the UI you had was something that wasn’t needed as you fight the space bugs)
-Codex (what you discover, what others discover, game lore, etc. instead of having to google it)

Again I know this isn’t massive amount of changes, or a massive redesign but this is a lot of things we’ve wanted for a long time and we’re getting it finally. Who knows what the next season is going to be. Even if the next season is a “massive potential” update (i.e. space legs but can only walk around your ships cockpit) that’ll be very cool. They’re working on it, just again, Fdev takes there time. I look forward to more.
