Flashback Friday- Max Payne 2: The fall of Max Payne

Who can’t appreciate Max Payne bullet time fight sequences? Today we will take a look back at Max Payne 2.

Max Payne 2 was released for PC on 10/15/2003. It was also released on Xbox (11/23/2003), Playstation 2(12/2/2003) and later on Steam (1/4/2008).

One of the things I appreciated most with the first two Max Payne titles is the story line. In Max Payne 2, you play as Max Payne who was formally a DEA agent for the NYPD. In the second title, he is a NYPD detective. In the first game, he was framed for murdering his partner but since cleared his name. The second game goes more into the story of Max Payne and Mona Sax. I personally like the story-line for the 1st Max Payne game better but this one was still not bad at all.

Max Payne 2 is a third person shooter. When first played, the game has one difficulty setting that adjusts to player level. If an area is too difficult for the player, the enemy AI is “dumbed down” and more health pickups become available (perfect for noobs like me). Once the game is completed, two more game options become available; New York Minute and Dead Man Walking.

New York Minute is a game mode that sores the player based on the time of completion of a level.

Dead Man Walking is a survival mode to determine how long the player can last fighting endlessly respawning enemies.

Now to the best part – Bullet Time. Bullet time is a mode that slows time temporarily. This allows the player to aim but also give a slight time advantage to make a move. Bullet time is metered but regenerated when not in use or by killing enemies.

Max Payne 2 is rated Mature and does have a dark ‘love story’. In my opinion, the development team did make efforts to polish and smooth the not-so-great aspects of the original game. The action is great and looking back, the graphics were good for it’s time. Ah nostalgia.
