Flashback Friday: Crysis

Many hail this game as a trend setting and one of the prettiest games on PC for the time. Some may even claim it looks gorgeous by today’s standards. The first person shooter came on to the scene in 2007, developed by Crytek, and is a spiritual successor to Crytek’s previous game Far Cry. Like its previous game, this is a first person shooter but this time Crytek’s game takes place in the future. This future has super suits that allow for special powers like super speed and super strength. These “super powers” the suit enables the player to use definitely add for some interesting gameplay. These different abilities allow the player to attack a given objective from a variety of ways. For instance the player can choose to give themselves super strength and attack an encampment of the enemy by punching and using melee explicitly to accomplish the mission. This type of open world environment and freedom of movement, as well the open way you’re allowed to attack the mission objective, is something that is definitely missing from modern shooters.

The other big point of contention with Crysis is that when it was released it required quite a beast of a computer to run it. It appeared to be more of a tech demo than a game in some regards, particularly the steep system requirements run it back in 2007. It definitely is a game with a large amount of shooting and sneaking. The gameplay can be rewarding at times, especially the choices of how to attack the enemy encampment. I feel like the weapon handling and diversity are a bit lackluster. You get the pistol, assault rifle, shotguns, and later on in the game you gain access to some alien weapons. While it would be nice to see more weapons in the game, it’s understandable that it is the first game the developers wanted to make sure the game was working and did not put a lot of weapons in. There is a severe lack of recoil and the guns feel rather weak. This could be explained by the fact that the player is wearing a super suit but it still feels odd looking back.

Wiggins Thoughts: Even with my setup I have issues getting the game to run at a proper 60fps while using Tactical Expansion Mod and that is really disappointing. I was hoping to be able do another play through of the game but the framerate issue was definitely an issue for me. I like how the mod added more weapons because I felt that there was a lack of choice when it came to weapon selection. While this game has its flaws and current technology does not “magically” make it run at 60+ FPS, there is a lot of good ideas and design decisions that the single player first person shooter market has left behind and that is something that will be missed.
